Thornbury Primary School

Free School Meals
You may have heard about the new Government’s changes to school funding. One of the key elements about our new funding, the ‘Pupil Premium’ is based on the number of children entitled to Free School Meals. We know we have a number of parents who are eligible for free school meals who do not claim them. If you are eligible, please could you claim for them as this will affect our funding in the future. All schools across Plymouth are being asked to urge parents to claim where they can, as this will affect our budget and possibly staffing levels etc. Thank you.

The Tummy Bugs have started doing the rounds. We have reminded all pupils about good hand washing. If your child has a tummy bug, please let us know, and please ensure they have had 48 hours clear before returning them to school. Thank you.

Holidays/ Weddings/ Families
Please do not request wedding leave unless it is for a very close relative. Only one day per year will be granted in these circumstances, and only with supporting evidence.
We are still getting a flurry of requests, with the reason for ‘unavoidable’ being given as going with other family members / grandparents etc. This is not seen as an unavoidable reason, as the matter still comes down to parental choice. Please do not make requests on the above basis, as they will not be authorised. ‘Unavoidable’ would refer to a parent not being able to take time off work at any other time. Most parents are very good at bringing in a letter from work about this. Thank you.

Road and Parking Request.
Parents have been very cooperative in not using the car park to drop off and pick up. We have received complaints from parents and local residents about parents parking inconsiderately and in some cases dangerously in the residential streets round and about the school. In one case recently, a resident was unable to pull into her drive, and in another, a parent reported having to walk, with their child, into the main road to get around cars parked on pavements near the junction. Please park considerately. We have been advised by the council and the police that anyone witnessing illegal or dangerous parking should be reported to the police, which we would clearly prefer to avoid for any of our families. Thank you

We have a petition and letters to sign about the request we keep making for a zebra crossing. Do call in for a copy to sign.

Sex and Relationships Education
This week all parents and carers will be receiving a letter explaining the framework for our new sex and relationships scheme of work and policy, which we trialled last year with Y5 and 6.
This is a subject bound to cause debate, and there was a very healthy discussion at the open morning, however the consensus is that it is important for children to be educated in a matter of fact way about the scientific aspects, in a moral and supportive framework about loving relationships. Please look out for this letter.
